On 24th October 2008, the people of Kalmunai and the Eastern Province lost a remarkable figure with the passing of Dr. A.L.M. Jameel. In 2025, as we mark the 17th anniversary of his demise, we reflect with gratitude on his life, service, and humanity.

Dr. Jameel was a man of dignity and humility, known for his patience in hardship and compassion towards people. His legacy as a doctor, educator, humanitarian, and community leader continues to inspire generations. His life was a guiding light dedicated to service, truth, and unity.

Education & Medical Achievements

Dr. Jameel was a pioneer in medical education and a trailblazer for the Muslim community in the Eastern Province.

  • In 1965, he became the first Muslim from the Eastern Province to qualify as an MBBS doctor.

  • From 1975–1978, he pursued postgraduate studies in London, where he obtained the MRCOG.

  • In 1994, he was honored with the prestigious FRCOG, once again becoming the first from the Eastern Province to achieve this milestone.

Despite opportunities to shine at the national and international level, Dr. Jameel made the selfless decision to return to Kalmunai to serve his people.

Medical Career

  • He began his career at Kalmunai Government Hospital in 1966.
  • In 1967, he left government service and founded the Central Nursing & Maternity Home, which provided exceptional maternity and child healthcare to the region.

  • Through decades of political unrest and social hardship, Dr. Jameel never abandoned his patients. His hospital remained a beacon of care and hope in the district.

Today, the institution he founded is known as Dr. Jameel Memorial Hospital, managed by his son, Dr. Rizan Jameel, continuing his noble vision.

Humanitarian Care, Social Concern & Ethnic Harmony

Dr. Jameel’s practice of medicine extended far beyond the hospital walls. He treated patients with deep compassion and respect, often supporting them in family matters, education, marriages, and livelihoods.

He was an advocate for social development, safety, and justice, openly condemning wrongdoing and encouraging good. Importantly, Dr. Jameel played a pivotal role in fostering ethnic integration, building bridges of peace and understanding among the Tamil, Muslim, and Sinhalese communities. His commitment to harmony left a profound mark on the social fabric of the Eastern Province.

Dr. Murugesu Pillai

Friendship with Dr. Murugesu Pillai

Dr. Jameel shared a strong bond with his contemporary, Dr. Murugesu Pillai, both personally and professionally. Together, they:

  • Provided free medical services for the poor.

  • Conducted free katna (circumcision) programs for children.

  • Collaborated on community projects, including the construction of the Kalmunai Mohiyadeen Grand Mosque.

Their friendship symbolized unity and service across communities.

Mahmood Ladies’ College Medical Conference (1993)

  • As Secretary of the Kalmunai Medical Association, Dr. Jameel organized a landmark medical conference and health camp in 1993 at Mahmood Ladies’ College.

    • The event was chaired by Professor Wilfred Perera, then-President of the Sri Lanka Medical Association.

    • More than 30 senior doctors from Colombo participated, with special air transport arranged by the late Minister A.R. Mansoor.

    • It was at this event that Dr. Jameel was formally recommended for the FRCOG fellowship, recognizing his excellence in medical service.

Contribution to Education

Dr. Jameel believed deeply in the power of education as a force for community progress.

  • He worked closely with many leading schools in Kalmunai, supporting their development.

  • He was a founder and Lifetime President of Al Hamiya Arabic College, dedicating himself to advancing education, nurturing young scholars, and empowering future leaders.

His commitment to education ensured opportunities for the younger generation, laying the foundation for long-term social growth.

Political & Social Engagement

  • Dr. Jameel actively worked to promote unity, cultural advancement, and professional development.

  • In 1987, he was instrumental in forming the Eastern Province Muslim Council, which brought together regional representatives to foster social unity.

  • He also served as the Eastern Province Representative for both the Young Men’s Muslim Association (YMMA) and the Sri Lanka Medical Association (SLMA), contributing to both community development and professional causes at a national level.
