The story of Dr. Jameel Memorial Hospital begins with a man whose dedication to healing transformed an entire community. In 1978, the late Dr. A.L.M. Jameel (MBBS, FRCOG) — the first doctor and consultant VOG in the Ampara District — founded the hospital with a clear and noble mission: to bring quality, accessible healthcare to the underserved people of Sri Lanka’s Eastern Province.

A respected physician, visionary leader, and tireless social advocate, Dr. Jameel was known not only for his medical expertise but also for his compassion and deep commitment to public welfare. He believed that every individual — regardless of their background — deserves the dignity of proper healthcare. His work laid the foundation for a hospital that continues to put patients at the center of everything it does.

Today, that vision is carried forward by Dr. M. Rizan Jameel, his son, a consultant in family medicine trained both locally and internationally. Under his leadership, the hospital has grown into a modern, multi-disciplinary medical facility serving thousands of patients each month with dedication, innovation, and care.
